Church in the Rain Forest

<< Back     Beginning >>

I built a chapel.

Harry Flinner with indians infront of the church

Back there in the jungle I wondered, “What does that man have to do to be saved?” I found the answer in my Bible. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.” Can you see what a difficult task we had to plant a Nazarene Church in that heathen environment?

Some Sundays we had as many as 100 Indians out for church.

We conducted church services, preached the Word, sang Christian songs, prayed and worshiped. But it was not a church. The adults we reached in our ministry were still so steeped in witchcraft and heathen practices that they were precluded from participating in baptism, church membership and leadership in the Church of the Nazarene I was sent to plant.

In the fifth year of our ministry we had our first genuine convert. One Indian understood and had the faith to believe that Jesus could save him. His name was Yon.

Yon, the first genuine believer

Three weeks after Yon became a Christian he was murdered by order of the witchdoctor. Our first convert was martyred.

These are some of the comments I have received from the thousands of readers who have bought my book.

“This is the best missionary book I have ever read.”

“As compelling as Betty Elliot’s book ‘Through Gates of Splendor.’”

“The good Lord certainly went with you.”

“Brother Flinner, your story reads like a novel.”

“Most missionary books are written by someone else writing about what the missionary did. You tell your own story."

* * * * *

That is true. I was there when my 9 year-old daughter screamed frantically as quicksand buried her up to her waist in sucking mud.

I was the one who was swept into the raging Marañon River, certain that I would drown that afternoon. I designed and built that strange looking house. This book is about me and my family and what we went through to take the Gospel to that tribe of aboriginal Indians.

The incredible stories you will read in my book BEYOND THE CALL could only be told by the missionary who was there. I am the missionary in these pictures.
